We Were Back Together Again! The year has passed so quickly!!! Members of Mocha Expressions and Nubian Circle Book Clubs met Saturday at our yearly joint session to discuss Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake.
This book came highly recommended by Terrell’s coworkers; so she selected it without hesitation.
We had a nice discussion as Terrell elevated the themes of sibling rivalry, women pitted against each other, obligation/tradition vs progress to relatable present-day issues/questions. We also talked about the 2016 election outcome and its reverberating effects.
We also welcomed first-timer Sharice to the clubs! She loves the urban fiction genre and will most likely be a member of both clubs!
Our Ratings

Terrell, Moderator: 4 - Enjoyed the story. A nice genre departure from the type of books she usually reads. Enjoyed the romance and suspense of the book.
Sharice: 4 - A different type of read, but enjoyed the story.
Monique: 4 - Enjoyed the characters and story.
Dossi - Didn’t read; premise didn’t appeal to her and couldn’t acquire the book in time.
Phyllis: 2 - Didn’t realize it was a Young Adult novel (Harry Potter meets The Hunger Games type of vibe) and felt the pacing was uneven, very slow in the beginning. Turned off by the open ending; definitely not interested in the sequel(s) to follow. Thought it had too many borrowed themes from other YA novels - not original and somewhat predictable.
P.S. For members who love the Urban Fiction/Gangster drama genres - contact Terrell at Mocha_Expressions at hotmail dot com. They’ll resume meetings in 2017 and read those genres exclusively.
Since the novel contained a great deal of magic from amateurs -
Phyllis opted to give away reminders of the awesomeness of
Black Girl Magic!!
Congrats to

Dossi for winning the travel mug
and
Monique snagged the journal!
