The Nubian Circle Book Club met to honor the late, great Toni Morrison. Our moderator, Angela, chose Love. Despite the confusion, the meeting went well. There were four in attendance: Angela, Ebony, Syreeta, and Natalie. Everyone had a difficult time understanding the characters and how they were related to Bill Cosey. We had a better understanding of the story towards the end of the meeting.

Our Thoughts & Ratings

NCBC Group Average: 3.25

Angela gave it a 3.5: It was a hard read, the characters were confusing. I felt like it would have been a great story, if I didn't have to struggle with the identity of the characters.

Ebony - 3.5: A very difficult to read, she wasn't impressed with the writing.

Syreeta - Read the first chapter, but will read the book

Natalie - 3: Difficult to read, too much back and forth in the chapters and didn't like having to think too hard to find out what's going on in the story.

Phyllis - 2.5/3: It was a great concept - an attempt to examine women's reliance on a conflicted and flawed man to "save" themselves amid the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement but ended up losing their identity and independence in a decades long fight amongst themselves. I found the choppy, flashback-style of storytelling very confusing. Voices and character point of view were lost in the transitions from scenes and chapters. The pacing was slow and arduous. I found myself not liking any of the characters or what would happen to them, which made this book a bit of a drag. Luckily, it was a short read.
